Saudi Arabian religious police beat man for using ATM meant only for women
A British man was reportedly beaten by Saudi Arabia's religious police after using a women-only ATM with his wife at a supermarket.
Three members from the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, or the Mutawa, followed Peter Howarth-Lees and his Saudi wife out of the store in Riyadh, The Telegraph reported.
"Then, suddenly and very violently, the three of them attacked me and threw me to the ground and tried unsuccessfully to take my phone," Howarth-Lees told a local website.
All three men repeatedly kicked his head and back and one even stomped on his face, he said.
Then his wife managed to push them off, which allowed him to get back on his feet for a few minutes -only for one to leap on him again.
"At this point the man managed to kick my wife in the stomach before I got her to the other side of the car to get her inside," he said.
Howarth-Lees can be heard yelling, "That's my wife, how dare you!" in a video of the incident that has been circulating on the Internet.
He said that he was "proud to live" in Saudi Arabia and did not blame the government for the aggression.
"This sort of thing happens to people but it is quite isolated,"he told the British site. "There are rogue elements in police forces everywhere, including the United States and Britain, too."
The head of the Mutawa already contacted Howarth-Lees, who admitted the religious police involved were at fault and that an investigation had been ordered.
